ISO 9001 is an all-encompassing term that refers to a standard development and is published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It is one of the world’s most recognized quality management systems. It helps organizations ensure that their customers are receiving high quality products and services. Benefits of implementing ISO 9001 include increased business efficiency, lower unnecessary cost, and higher levels of customer satisfaction. The certification process includes implementing the set requirements of ISO 9001 and then completing registrar’s audit confirming the organization has met the required standards.
AS9120 and AS9100:
AS9120 is a company level certification based on the standards published by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) titled “Quality Management Systems-Aerospace Requirements for Stockist Distributers”. To be certified by AS9120, a company must first be certified by the ISO 9001 set of standards. This certification is intended for an organization that produces parts, materials, and assembles, and sells these products to a customer in the Aerospace industry. AS9120A was created as the revised set of AS9120 standards. Some changes include including the updated version of ISO9001 and expanding the scope to include defense, aviation, and space. For an organization to maintain the AS9120A certification, they will be subjected to annual or regularly scheduled audits where the organization’s compliance with the set standards are evaluated.
The U.S. Government requires all manufactures, exporters, and brokers of defense articles, defense services or related technical data to be ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) compliant. For a company involved in the sale or distribution of goods or services covered under the United States Munitions List (USML), the requirement of being ITAR certified means that the company must be registered with the State Department’s DDTC. If required by the DDTC’s website, the company must understand and abide by ITAR as it applies to their USML linked goods or services. The company themselves is certifying that they operate in accordance with ITAR when they accept the roll of being a supplier for the USML export.
